AI vs Machine Learning vs Deep Learning

AI vs Machine Learning vs Deep Learning

These three terms get used interchangeably in news articles and job listings, but they mean different things. Understanding the relationship between them clears up a lot of confusion.

Think of them as nested circles:

Deep Learning ⊂ Machine Learning ⊂ Artificial Intelligence

Each one is a subset of the one outside it.

Artificial Intelligence (the outer circle)

AI is the broadest term. It means any technique that allows a machine to mimic intelligent behaviour.

This includes things that don't "learn" at all — like a chess program that evaluates moves using hand-written rules, or a chatbot that matches your message to a list of scripted responses. Those are AI in the traditional sense, even if they're not very impressive.

AI is the field. Machine learning and deep learning are methods within it.

Machine Learning (the middle circle)

Machine learning is AI that learns from data.

Instead of being given explicit rules, an ML system is trained on examples. It finds patterns in the data and uses those patterns to make predictions or decisions on new inputs.

Examples of ML techniques:

  • Decision trees: flowchart-like structures that classify inputs step by step
  • Random forests: many decision trees combined
  • Support vector machines: find the best boundary between categories
  • Linear regression: predict a number based on input features

These techniques are used everywhere — in your bank's fraud detection, in recommendation systems, in medical diagnosis tools. They're less glamorous than neural networks but enormously practical.

Deep Learning (the inner circle)

Deep learning is machine learning using neural networks with many layers.

A neural network is loosely inspired by the brain — it's made of layers of mathematical units (neurons) that pass signals to each other. "Deep" just means there are many layers.

Deep learning excels when:

  • You have lots of data (millions of examples)
  • The patterns are complex (like recognising objects in photos or understanding language)
  • You have enough compute to train the model

Deep learning is what powers:

  • Large language models (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini)
  • Image recognition (your phone's camera, medical scans)
  • Voice assistants (Siri, Alexa)
  • Image generation (DALL-E, Midjourney, Stable Diffusion)
